Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis is common to the breed.
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis is caused by a malformation of the bulldog vertebral tail bones. The twisted, ingrown, corkscrew, bully tail can present in many varieties, shapes, and forms, each with a different degree of severity, and a different degree of discomfort and pain intensity.
In contrast to most other breeds, your bulldog and French bulldog tail bones will often turn around backward and on occasion twist
like a pretzel, dragging with it the skin and hair. The tail, in many of those cases, is deeply embedded and tucked-in, hidden, with only parts of it visually showing.
For every bulldog with a tail-pocket, the odds for a painless life are different. Most depend on topical daily care and some are doomed, regardless of your best efforts.
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis CAUSE & EFFECT:
- Frictional trauma
- Excessive moisture
- Severe Inflammation
- Itch & Pain
- Redness & Ulceration
- Discoloration & Hair loss
- Smell & Discharge
- Draining tract
- Yeast & Bacteria Overgrowth/Infections (Pyoderma)
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis OTHER:
NOSE (Bulldog and French bulldog nasal fold skin moist dermatitis). Like the tail, the apposed skin and friction leads to excessive moisture that is compounded by tears and mucus from the eye.
VAGINAL (Bulldog and French bulldog vaginal skin fold moist dermatitis). Like the tail, the apposed skin and friction lead to excessive moisture compounded by urine and other vaginal secretions.
TOES / PAW (Bulldog and French bulldog toes and paws skin fold moist dermatitis). Like the tail the apposed skin and friction lead to excessive moisture that is compounded by licking, bulldog paw allergic dermatitis, and bulldog interdigital cysts.
CHIN & LIPS: “Bulldog Acne” is often compounded by constant wetness due to drooling and water bowl chin dripping.
OTHER BULLY FOLDS: Bulldog neck folds, face folds, armpit folds, and inguinal area folds, as well as all other potential bulldogs moist skin fold dermatitis “hot spots”.
SELECTIVE BREEDING: Most bulldog and French bulldog skin fold moist dermatitis problems are due to selective breeding.
Most times, the selection is for the cute flat face (Brachycephalic), folded precious skin, and charming corkscrew tail.
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis DIAGNOSIS:
DIGITAL EXAM: The degree of the tail problem and the therapeutic urgency might not be obvious to the new bulldog owner. It is critical that a digital exam (best done with gloves and a wipe) is done since most of the inflamed, ulcerative, and infected areas are deeply embedded, and not necessarily in plain sight.

Dr. Kraemer’s V4B Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis TIPS & WARNINGS:
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis TIP 1: The tail is often tight and deep, thus the most critical parts are often missed by the hesitant owner. Make sure to go all the way under, deep in the tail pocket and tail folds. Most of the “action” (infections) are in those hidden parts.
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis TIP 2: Other reasons for your bulldog to be irritated in his/her backend are:
- Anal gland impaction
- Allergies like bulldog flea allergy
- Female bulldogs “Bully vaginal skin fold moist dermatitis”
Bulldogs and French Bulldogs Tail Pocket Skin Fold Dermatitis TIP 3: For bulldog skin fold management, I have custom small bully skin fold wipes, bully skin fold antiseptic spray, lotions, and skin fold rinses which many of you find helpful for tail folds. But for bully tail fold dermatitis, by far my V4B Antiseptic Bully Skin Fold XL Wipes are the most popular.
- EXTRA LARGE: They are XL, thus will cover your entire hand/fingers protecting you from the “stinky stuff”.
- PULLOUT: They are pullout style, thus easy and convenient.
- $: They are inexpensive, each jar contains 70 XL wipes.
- EASY: The wipe’s large, thin surface can do the job well, even in a very folded, protected tail.
Warning # 1 VAGINAL: Do not use a wipe to clean the vaginal area after using it on the tail.
Warning # 2 ANAL CLEAN: Don’t mistake the “butthole” with the bully tail pocket and folds. Nevertheless, please clean that area in addition to the tail pocket, fecal material and anal gland secretions can end up in the folds and pocket.
Warning # 3 VET: For bulldog tail removal surgery, I recommend seeking a veterinarian experienced with the procedure.
Warning #4 PAIN: Severe bully skin fold dermatitis cases awaiting surgery should be on pain management. Bulldog tail fold dermatitis is a painful condition.
Warning # 5 STEROIDS: Treating and preventing bulldog tail fold dermatitis usually requires the proper use of daily wipes.
I don’t recommend long-term systemic steroids and antibiotics.
Systemic medication should be used only for a rare acute events, and only short-term. They are harmful to your dog and ineffective for long-term management.
Warning # 6 ALLERGIES: Bulldog allergies, such as bully flea allergy, bulldog atopic dermatitis, and bulldog food allergies often compound the tail fold problems, therefore, make sure that your bulldog is effectively treated for those.
