As a direct consequence of medicinal cannabis legalization and the popularity of its recreational and medicinal usage, we have been seeing a higher caseload of accidental THC toxicity in bulldogs and other dog breeds.
THC toxicity usually involves accidental digestion of the cannabis (“grass”, marijuana, pot, liquid forms, laced cookies, etc).

Symptoms may include:
- DROWSY
- LISTLESS
- ATAXIA
- SEDATION
- DILATED PUPILS

WARNING:
Bulldog THC poisoning can present like other poisons, such as the deadly anti-freeze digestion.
TIP:

THC poisoning is mostly based on history (reports by owners) and clinical signs.

THC POISONING TREATMENT-INDUCED VOMITING:
Inducing vomiting in a bulldog who is suspected of ingesting THC is only effective when done in the first few minutes before it is absorbed from the gut.
WARNING: to avoid inhalation pneumonia don’t give it to a heavily sedated (intoxicated) bulldog.
WARNING: due to the anti-nausea properties of cannabis, inducing vomiting might be difficult to achieve
THC TOXICITY ACTIVATED CHARCOAL TREATMENT:
Charcoal coats the stomach and slows toxin absorption.
TIP:
As with induced vomiting, the sooner it’s given, the more effective it will be
WARNING:
Never ever force the charcoal or let your ER Dr. do it, forcing the material in bulldogs often leads to aspiration pneumonia. I would only give it mixed with food or via a gastric or nasogastric tube.
Other THC-poisoning supportive care includes
- FLUID: IV fluid
- TPR MONITORING: body temperature, respiration, and pulse
THC Poisoning in Bulldogs Prognosis:
The THC toxicity prognosis is usually good, but supportive treatment might be required for a few days until the THC effects subside.
DRUG INTERACTION WARNING:
Cannabis will interact with other medications, so if you plan to use any of these products, be sure your veterinarian is aware that you are doing so.
