Description
When should I use Crusty Hyperkeratosis Nose & Paw BALM on my Bulldog?
Why this one
A crusty, cracked bulldog nose is not dirt and it is not dehydration. It is hyperkeratosis: the skin on the nose and the paw pads producing more keratin than it sheds, so it piles up into hard crusts and frond-like growths. Keratin has no stretch in it, so once the layer is thick enough, normal movement splits it, and a split in a paw pad or a nose is painful and bleeds.
It is the problem of a pair of leather boots left by the radiator. The leather does not crack because it is dirty, it cracks because it has dried and hardened and still has to bend every time you walk. Nobody fixes that by scrubbing them. You work wax into the leather, and you keep doing it, because the drying never stops.
This balm is that wax. Shea butter, coconut oil and castor oil soften and hydrate the thickened layer, and beeswax seals the surface so the moisture stays in rather than evaporating on the next walk. The ingredients are food-grade and not harmful if licked, which is the practical requirement here, since a bulldog will lick her nose within four seconds of you putting anything on it.
Apply it at night when she is settling, so it has time to work before her tongue finds it. Softened crusts lift away on their own over a good few weeks, and the honest expectation is management rather than cure: hyperkeratosis usually comes back if you stop, so most owners keep a tin going indefinitely, the way you keep the boot wax in the cupboard. Deep fissures that bleed, a nose that is losing pigment or changing shape, or sore pads that make her limp should be looked at by your own veterinarian first, since a few conditions that need treatment look very similar from the outside.
Not sure if this is the right one?
If the skin around the nose rope is also pink, damp or smelly, the Bully Wrinkles Antiseptic Lotion is the one for that fold, and the two work on different problems in the same square inch. Dry, flaky skin elsewhere on the body usually responds better to feeding the barrier from the inside with Bully Fish Oil EFA. Owners dealing with a crusty nose and dry skin generally want both, which is cheaper as a V4B bundle.
Important: this page is educational and is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan for your own bulldog. A nose that cracks, bleeds or changes color can have causes other than hyperkeratosis, so it deserves a look from your veterinarian.
