Description
When should I use Itchy Bully Medicated Spray on my Bulldog?
Why this one
Most of the skin damage I see on an itchy bulldog was not done by the allergy. It was done by the bulldog. One patch starts to tingle, she licks and chews it, the licking inflames the skin, the inflamed skin itches harder, and round it goes. By the time she is in my exam room the original trigger is often beside the point. The loop has taken over.
It behaves like a microphone held too close to its own speaker. A small sound goes in, comes out louder, goes back in louder still, and within seconds the room is screaming. Nobody fixes that by turning the volume down politely. You move the microphone and break the loop. Quieting the itch on a flaring patch does the same job: it takes her teeth out of the circuit long enough for the skin to settle.
That is what this bottle is for. Pramoxine is a mild topical numbing agent that may help dull the itch signal where you spray it. Micronized colloidal oatmeal is the old-fashioned soothing part, the same reason an oatmeal bath feels good on chicken pox. Omega-6 fatty acids help feed the skin barrier underneath. The formulation is alcohol free, which matters a great deal, because alcohol on a raw, chewed patch stings enough that your bulldog will remember the bottle and hide from it next time.
Use it as a spot tool rather than a routine. Shampoos and conditioners are the weekly maintenance; this is what lives on the shelf for the Tuesday evening when one elbow, one flank or one hot spot flares and you need it calm tonight. Spray it on the area, not around it, and keep her busy for a few minutes so it stays where you put it. If the patch is spreading, weeping, smells sour, or keeps coming back in the same place, that is a visit to your own veterinarian rather than another bottle.
Anti-itch topicals are routinely used alongside what your veterinarian prescribes rather than instead of it, and the decision on how to treat stays with them.
Not sure if this is the right one?
If the problem is the whole dog rather than one patch, start with the V4B Hypoallergenic Medicated Shampoo. If the flare sits in a fold, a tail pocket or between the toes, the Skin Fold Antiseptic Lotion gets in where a spray tends to run off. Most owners end up wanting the bath routine and the spot tool together, which is cheaper as a V4B bundle.
Important: this page is educational and is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan for your own bulldog. Numbing an itch makes a dog more comfortable, it does not tell you what started it, so anything that is not improving deserves a look from your veterinarian.
