Bulldog Wrinkle Infection: What Should I Do?
Hello Dr. Kraemer,
My Bulldog puppy has recurring infections in several skin folds. We live near the Persian Gulf, where it is hot and humid. His face fold and nose rope are red, painful, itchy, dark, and smelly. Antibiotics and a wrinkle cream have not solved the problem.
Could this be a yeast infection? How should I clean the folds, and when does he need another veterinary examination? Are antiseptic skin-fold wipes appropriate for the nose rope?

Dear Bulldog parent,
A painful, red, smelly fold that is spreading or not improving needs another veterinary examination. This is more than a housekeeping problem. It may be a bacterial infection, a yeast infection, or both. Dark staining and odor alone cannot tell us which organism is responsible.
The medical name is skin-fold dermatitis, also called intertrigo. Bulldogs are built with adorable wrinkles and very little ventilation. Heat, humidity, tears, saliva, and trapped debris can turn a cute fold into a tiny tropical greenhouse.
Why the first treatment may not have worked
If an antibiotic did not help, your veterinarian may need to check a sample from the fold under the microscope. Cytology can reveal bacteria, yeast, or both. A culture may be useful when the infection is severe, recurrent, or resistant to treatment. The plan may also need to address allergies, an eyelid problem, a deep nose rope, or another condition that keeps the area wet.
Repeated antibiotics without confirming the cause can miss yeast and encourage resistant bacteria. Prescription treatment is sometimes necessary, but the drug and duration should match the examination findings.
When to seek prompt veterinary care
- The fold is very painful, swollen, bleeding, ulcerated, or producing pus.
- The infection is spreading or has a strong odor.
- Your Bulldog is rubbing the face, squinting, or keeping an eye closed.
- Your puppy is lethargic, not eating, or has a fever.
- The problem keeps returning despite regular care.
A deep nose-rope infection can irritate the eye. Squinting or eye pain deserves same-day attention because a corneal ulcer can worsen quickly.
A simple wrinkle-care routine
- Gently open the fold. Do not scrub raw skin.
- Remove moisture and debris. Use a veterinarian-approved skin-fold wipe or cleanser.
- Reach the full depth of the fold. The surface may look clean while the hidden pocket remains damp.
- Dry the area completely. Use clean gauze or a soft pad. Moisture is the repeat offender.
- Adjust the frequency to the dog. A healthy fold may need care several times a week. A humid climate or deep fold may require daily care. An actively infected fold needs the schedule prescribed by your veterinarian.
Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, essential oils, perfumed baby wipes, and harsh powders. They can irritate already inflamed skin or cause trouble near the eyes.
Can antiseptic wipes be used on the nose rope?
