Why this one
Dental disease is the single most common medical problem I find in bulldogs, and by three years old most of them already have some. The reason is mechanical rather than mysterious. A bulldog jaw is short, the teeth are the same size as any other dog’s, so they sit crowded and rotated with very little space between them for saliva and chewing to clean naturally. Plaque, which is simply bacteria mixed with saliva, starts forming again within hours of any cleaning.
Plaque behaves like wet cement. While it is soft you can lift it off with a cloth and very little effort. Leave it and it sets into tartar, and at that point no wipe, rinse, chew or additive on earth will shift it. That is a chisel job, which in practice means a scale and polish under anaesthesia at your veterinarian. Everything you do at home is aimed at the window while the cement is still wet.
This is an antimicrobial wipe for that window. You lift the lip, rub the wipe along the teeth and especially along the gum line, and it takes off food, debris and the soft film before it hardens. There is one job here that is very much a bulldog job: tufts of hair that work their way under the gum line, picked up from chewing toys, bedding and themselves. Hair sitting in a gum pocket is a splinter that never comes out on its own, so grabbing and easing those tufts out while you wipe is worth the extra few seconds.
The label says twice daily or after meals. In the real world, once a day every day beats a perfect week followed by three weeks of nothing, so pick the version you will actually keep up over a good few weeks. If you are starting with a bulldog who has never had a hand near her mouth, spend the first few days just lifting the lip and praising her, then introduce the wipe. Sore or easily bleeding gums, a strong mouth odour or any change in how she eats should be looked at by your own veterinarian before you start a home routine.
Not sure if this is the right one? The Dental Antimicrobial Water Additive is the lazy companion to this one: it works every time she drinks, with no cooperation required. A wipe reaches the gum line that water never touches, so most owners use the additive daily and the wipe as often as their bulldog allows, which is cheaper together as a V4B bundle.
Important: this page is educational and is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan for your own bulldog. Home care may help slow plaque, it cannot remove tartar that has already set or treat disease below the gum line, so a mouth that looks or smells wrong deserves a look from your veterinarian.
