Due to their distinctive anatomy and breed-specific predispositions, interdigital cysts are a frequent and often frustrating issue in bulldogs and French bulldogs. The breed is prone to developing these painful, inflamed cysts between their toes because […]

Why Bulldogs Are Prone to Interdigital Cysts?

Several breed-specific traits contribute to the development of interdigital cysts in bulldogs:

🚨Paw Webbing:

Collecting debris, moisture, and bacteria in and around the webbing leads to pododermatitis

🚨Traumatic Hair Implantation:

When the breed’s thick, bristle-like hairs are forcefully driven into the skin during paw contact, they can pierce the hair follicles and cause inflammation, leading to folliculitis and blister formation.

🚨Wrinkle  Skinfolds Dermatitis:

Inflammation from moist, dirty wrinkles can extend into the interdigital spaces, leading to paw skinfold infectious dermatitis.

🚨Allergies & Pododermatitis:

Bulldogs are highly allergy-prone, often leading to chronic paw inflammation exacerbating the existing interdigital cysts.

🚨Bulldog Body Structure:

Their short, heavy frame places extra pressure on their paws.

 3 X Bulldog Interdigital Cyst Don’ts

Below are the three most important interdigital cyst don’ts that will help you prevent and manage this condition, courtesy of Dr. Kraemer.

1️⃣ Don’t Allow Surgical Cutting or Probing

Slicing and surgically probing the cyst might seem like a quick fix your vet recommends. It will damage the hair follicle, inviting more germs to the party and kicking off a never-ending cycle of infection and inflammation. A classic case of “don’t poke the bully.”

2️⃣ Avoid Long-Term Antibiotics & Steroids

These meds might fight the infection, but they can also throw your bulldog’s gut and skin microbiome into chaos, weaken the immune system, and roll out the red carpet for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It’s like winning the battle but inviting trouble to move in.

💊Use them only for short-term relief in severe flare-ups.

3️⃣ Don’t Rush into Surgery

Fusion Podoplasty is the nuclear option—reserved for those painful, chronic cases where nothing else works. It should only be done by a seasoned surgeon who knows their way around a bulldog’s paws.
