Fr. Bulldog With A Serious Nasal Discharge Problem
Dr Kraemer, I am in desperate need of an effective means to control Jaspers chronic nasal inflammation. He is a 6yr 8m blue cleft palate hydroscephalys bully .
BULLDOG SURGRIES HISTORY:
He has had 3 palate surgeries, nares done, antibiotic resistant uti, stones, scrotalurethrostomy, and chronic pneumonia.
His initial hard palate surgery was incorrectly done leaving the nasal bone to curl up into the nasal cavity causing chronic obstructions with mucus build up, runny noses that effect his breathing,
He had his tonsils and inverted saccules removed in Febuary at ASCM-Flint and a soft palate correction. It was a long diffucult recovery.
BULLDOG NASAL DISCHARGE MEDICATION
He is on omeprazole 20mg am and pm, 30 mgs of zyrtec everyday. He does have vomiting regurge tendencies so we have reglan, ondansetron and cerenia on hand at all times. Currently the mucus is causing difficulty even when drinking water, he has collapsed. He has been on claritan, cough tabs, guifenesin, steriods, Temeril-P, Natura petz organics supplements but nothing prevents and controls the runny nose and mucus problem. Jasper is on Wysong hypoallergenic kibble with a urinary topper.
Please any advice, wisdom, or insight that could improve Jaspers’s life.
Thank you!!! 🐾 🙏 ❤️
Answer for French Bulldog With a Serious Nasal Discharge Problem
Dear Dave, Tracy, & Jasper,
Thank you for sharing Jasper’s photo with us.
Given Jasper’s complex situation—multiple medications, a history of surgeries, and ongoing health challenges—it’s difficult to provide specific advice without a thorough physical evaluation.
FR. BULLDOG NASAL DISCHARGE MEDICATION ANSWER:
I suggest reducing the number of medications, particularly the steroid (Termeril P), and discussing with your vet the possibility of switching to a different anti-inflammatory option.
⚠️ Temeril P is a pill with a steroid, it’s expensive and mixed with other drugs. I would not use a combo pill and I would try and taper the steroid. (it can be harmful)
It will be more cost-effective, and you can reduce medication use by identifying which works best—something impossible with a combination pill.
BULLDOG RX SIDE EFFECTS SOLUTION:
⚠️All these medications can negatively impact Jasper’s gut, skin, and mouth microbiome, and cause gut dysbiosis and leaky bowls. You might want to supplement with some bully therapeutics such as:
- Bully prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes could help replace and heal the gut bacteria (dysbiosis).
- Consider boosting his immune system with a stress-free environment and a Bully immune supplement.
BULLDOG NOSE DISEASE DIAGNOSES RECOMMENDED:
For a more tailored customized treatment and accurate diagnosis of his chronic condition is required, therefor further evaluation should be done that includes tests such as:
- Rhinoscopy: scope the nasal cavity and nasopharyngeal space for abnormalities, polyps, and tumors.
- Culture, biopsy, and cytology can be done at that time
- CT & MRI: additional imaging, such as a CT or MRI, might be necessary.
