French Bulldog First Heat and Estrus Cycle
My female French bulldog puppy, Lily, just turned 1 in September and still hasn't had her first heat. Is this normal?
How Soon Should I Spay?
Should she be spayed?❓❓❓
I am worried about anesthesia; is it best to wait?❓❓❓
Thank you, Lily & The Jordensbergs 🐾🙏
Answer for French Bulldog: First Heat and Estrus Cycle
🐾 First Heat & The Frenchie Lady Cycle: What Every Dog Mom and Dad Should Know!
So your little Frenchie diva is growing up? Welcome to the Drama of the Doggy Hormones! 😅 Let’s break down her heat cycle like a real-life bulldog soap opera — in 4 easy-to-follow episodes.
French and English bulldog females can reach puberty as early as 6 months and as late as 18–24 months.
Bulldog and French Bulldog 4- Phases Heat Cycle
A sexually mature French bulldog female usually goes through four heat cycle phases
Bulldog Heat Phase 1: PROESTRUS
"Boys, Back Off! 🚫": This is when male bulldogs are interested in a female bulldog, but she is not ready to mate.
- Age: Can start as early as 6 months... or fashionably late at 18–24 months (because it's a Frenchie Ladie, late bloomer).
- What’s happening? Her vulva swells (yep, it’s a thing), and there’s some bloody discharge. Not fun, but totally normal.
- Mood: “Flirt mode ON, but paws off, boys!”
- Lasts: Around 7–14 days!
Bulldog Heat Phase 2: ESTRUS HEAT
"Hot Girl Season! 🔥" This is the time when a female bulldog is ready and willing to mate, and this is what most owners call "heat.".
- What's Happening?: The actual “heat” part everyone panics about.
- Bleeding: This is when she's ready to mingle. Bleeding usually stops or slows down.
- Breeding Phase: She might flirt back now… and yes, this is the time she can get pregnant.
- Mood: “Hey handsome, come here often?”
- Lasts: 5–10 days, but sometimes longer.
The estrus phase is the only stage she can get pregnant.
Bulldog Heat Phase 3: DIESTRUS
"Am I or Aren’t I?❓": This comes after mating; at this point, your Frenchie is either pregnant or not, and her hormone levels return to normal.
- Bleeding: your Frenchie settles down, no bleeding.
- Pregnancy: She’s either pregnant or... just done with the drama.
- Hormones: return to normal, and she’s back to chill. 🏖️
- Mood: “Let me nap and watch bulldog Netflix.”
- Lasts: 2–4 months.
Bulldog Heat Phash 4: ANESTRUS
"Zen Mode": This is a period when there is no attraction between male and female bulldogs. This is the resting stage, lasting until the next cycle begins
-
Bleeding: The quiet phase. No swelling, no bleeding, no flirty behavior. Just naps and snacks.
-
Mood: “Don’t even LOOK at me, Chad. 👀”
-
Lasts: 4–5 months (sometimes longer).
Bulldog and Fr. Bulldog Heat Summary:
"IN HEAT 🔥": Bulldogs and French bulldogs in heat usually mean that they are in Proestrus or Estrus.
Bulldog Puppy First Heat Cycle Symptoms:
- D/C (Discharge): A little or a lot — you might notice bloody vaginal discharge. Totally normal, no need to panic!
- SWELL (swollen vulva): Her lady parts may look a bit puffy — kinda like lip fillers but... not the cute kind
- ROMANCE (love is in the air)🌹: Suddenly, all the neighborhood boys want her number. Male dogs will start sniffing around.
- LICKING (hygiene time): She might be licking her vulva more often to keep things clean — it’s not a bad habit, it’s hygiene
- FREQUENT PEE BREAKS 🚻: She may need to pee more often — a not-so-subtle way of leaving “perfume samples” for her admirers.
Fr. Bulldog First Heat Cycle Duration & Interval
Cycles may be irregular, especially in young dogs. Bulldog heat cycle might take up to two years to become regular.
Bulldog and Fr. Bulldog HEAT DURATION:
➡️Heat can last 1–2 weeks. Your girl’s heat usually lasts 1–2 weeks.
Expect flirty vibes, extra licking, and some spotting — it’s her "Hot Girl Walk" season.
Bulldog and Fr. Bulldog HEAT INTERVAL:
➡️Typically recycles every 4–10 months.
Most mature, productive, intact female bulldogs have two heat cycles per year, but the interval can vary depending on the individual.
But heads up: Puppies and young divas can be all over the place! It might take up to 2 years for her cycle to settle into a rhythm.
Cycles may be irregular, especially in young dogs. Bulldog heat cycle might take up to two years to become regular.
Is Your French Bulldog Missing First Heat and Estrus Cycle? (Normal Versus Abnormal)
So you're sipping your coffee, side-eyeing your little Frenchie princess like, "Girl… shouldn’t you have had your first heat by now?" ☕
Here’s the scoop:
Totally Normal: Heat can show up as early as a few months or as late as 1.5–2 years.
Most Frenchies hit their first cycle around 8–12 months, but it all depends on genetics, health, and if she’s more fashionably late than usual.
Abnormal (Ask Your Vet)🩺: If she’s over 2 years old with zero signs of heat (no swelling, no discharge, no flirty behavior), it might be time for a quick vet check to rule out hormonal or developmental issues.
Bottom Line: No heat yet? Don’t stress — some Frenchies are just late bloomers. Think of it as puppy puberty with a flexible schedule!
Bulldog and French Bulldog Silent Heat
So you’re waiting for the drama — swelling, bleeding, flirty looks — and… nothing? Your little Frenchie queen might be having a “Silent Heat.”
WHAT IS SILENT HEAT?
Some young female bulldogs (especially first-timers) go through their first ovulation without any obvious signs —
- no bleeding
- no puffiness
- No diva behavior.
-It’s all happening behind the scenes.
Think of it like a soft launch into womanhood — no press release, no fireworks. Just hormones doing their thing quietly
👀 What to Watch For: Even if there are no outward signs, she can still be fertile, so keep an eye on her and don’t let her hang with the boys just yet.
SILENT HEAT: "Silent heat" is common to young bulldogs ovulating for the first time.

What Are The Reasons For a Silent Heat?
🔍If your little Frenchie is way past her first birthday with no heat signs, or if her cycle seems off, there could be more going on under the fur.
Here are some common culprits:
- DIET:
- Poor nutrition = poor cycle
- Missing key vitamins or minerals? Her body might hit “pause”
- 💊RX: Adverse effects of medication
- DISEASES:
- Venereal diseases or general illnesses may suppress her heat cycle
- Even low-grade chronic infections can throw off her system
- HORMONAL:
- If she’s not making enough reproductive hormones, heat may not start at all
- Blood tests can help figure this out
- GENETIC
- Some pups inherit a slow-to-start cycle or even reproductive issues
- Especially common in certain bulldog lines
- INFECTION
- CYTE or TUMOR: Ovarian cysts and tumors can affect egg production and ovulation.
- CHRONIC STRESS: due to
- parasite infestation
- environmental
- chronic illness
- hormonal disease
🚩 What Are "First Heat Red Flags"?
- No Heat by 18–24 Months: If your Frenchie is over 2 years old with zero signs of heat (no swelling, no spotting, no flirty behavior).
- Long Gaps Between Cycles: Once her cycle starts, heat should return every 4–10 months.
- Signs of Heat but No Ovulation
She’s got the swelling, maybe some spotting… but no mating interest, no hormonal shifts? Could be a silent or split heat — or a deeper issue. - Sudden Behavior Change Without Heat Signs: Lethargy, irritability, or changes in appetite without an obvious cycle? Something’s up.
- Abnormal Discharge: Green, thick, or foul-smelling discharge = 🚨 call your vet ASAP (could be infection or pyometra).
- Over-licking or Vulvar Discomfort: If she’s licking a lot or seems uncomfortable, but there’s no visible heat, might be cysts, infection, or irritation.
- Visible Abnormalities (Lumps, Asymmetry): Swollen abdomen, vulvar irregularities, or masses = time for an exam.
- She’s Had a Heat Before… Then Nothing: If your Frenchie had a heat cycle, but then nothing for over a year — red flag
