5. Bulldog STNOTIC NARES MUST DO:

Bulldog stenotic pinched nose is a collapse of the nasal cartilage leading to a severely pinched nose. The condition is part of a restrictive airway syndrome we call “brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)” or in plain language the “flat squash face/head syndrome”. The pinched nose condition can be observed early in life and is usually manifested with a loud breathing sound, sleep apnea, and snorting.

Bulldog and Fr. Bulldog Stenotic Pinched Nose

French bulldogs are particularly vulnerable to this condition. Both English and French bulldogs suffering from stenotic nares often suffer from other BOAS problems most commonly elongated soft palate.

  • DIAGNOSIS: is visual and auditory
  • PREVENTION: Avoid breeding bulldogs with BOAS they are likely to pass it to their offspring
  • MANAGEMENT: minimal stress and excitement, therapeutic supplements that promote calmness.
  • TREATMENT: Surgical correction

Bulldog stenotic nares is debilitating and stressful and will progress as your bully ages, thus treatment timing is critical

6. Bulldog ELONGATED SOFT PALATE MUST DO:

The elongated soft palate is a prevalent and serious airway issue that both English and French bulldogs often encounter as they reach adulthood. Alongside stenotic nares, it contributes to the brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), colloquially known as the “flat squash face/head syndrome.” The elongated soft palate obstructs airflow through the larynx, which, if not addressed promptly, can result in laryngeal fatigue and irreversible collapse.

Bulldogs with this condition are at a heightened risk of aspiration pneumonia

Bulldog and Fr. Bulldog Elongated Soft Palate

  • DIAGNOSIS: sedation or anesthesia is required for a visual diagnosis, radiographs, and auditory stridor, hacking, retching, and exercise intolerance
  • PREVENTION: Avoid breeding bulldogs with BOAS they are likely to pass it to their offspring
  • MANAGEMENT: minimal stress and excitement; therapeutic supplements that promote calmness.
  • TREATMENT: Surgical correction

The elongated soft palate condition in bulldogs is not only debilitating but also progressively worsens over time.

Therefore, timely treatment is crucial to prevent further deterioration and alleviate the stress it imposes on the dog.

9. Aging Bulldog DIET & NUTRITION:

Ensuring a balanced, high-quality diet and proper nutrition is crucial for the well-being of your aging bulldog. Opt for a diet specifically designed for mature canines to accommodate their changing nutritional needs. Avoid falling for expensive, hyped diets and marketing gimmicks. Instead, prioritize reputable brand names known for their quality and reliability.

You can supplement the diet with therapeutic supplements

10. BULLDOG STEM CELL & CYROBANKING

Dr. Kraemer is a pioneering advocate of stem cell therapy, offering same-day treatment with the option for cryobanking for future needs. Stem cells, abundant in adipose tissue (fat), can be easily, safely, and cost-effectively harvested during elective procedures like spaying and neutering in bulldog puppies. These cells can be utilized for immediate treatment or banked for future requirements.

Additionally, the stored stem cells can be accessed and used at a relatively low cost, safely, and often without the need for anesthesia, providing a versatile therapeutic option for various conditions.

11. BULLDOG INTESTINAL PARASITE PREVENTION (FECAL & DEWORMING):

A maturing adult bulldog can suffer from a wide range of parasitic infestations both topically and internally.

Early parasitic preventives are vital for the well-being of your aging bulldog

Bulldogs and French bulldogs are susceptible to intestinal parasites, including worms and contagious protozoan organisms. These parasites can be acquired from the environment or transmitted by other parasites like fleas. Infestation with these parasites can lead to significant physical harm to your bulldog, especially when compounded by stress. Therefore, it’s crucial to implement preventive measures and regular deworming protocols to protect your dog’s health and well-bein

PUBLIC HEALTH ZOONOSIS:

Preventing intestinal parasites in bulldogs is not only crucial for the health of your pets but also for the safety of your family, particularly children. Many of these parasites are contagious and pose a risk to humans. Children, in particular, are vulnerable because of their immature immune systems and may not fully grasp proper hygiene practices.

Therefore, implementing effective preventive measures, such as regular deworming of your pets, maintaining cleanliness in living areas, and teaching children proper handwashing and hygiene, is essential to safeguard both the health of your pets and the well-being of your family.

Intestinal parasitic prevention is critical for the safety of your kids and family

INTESTINAL PROTOZOA in Bulldog and French Bulldog:

The common protozoa are contracted from the environment and water sources contaminated by fecal material.

They are very contagious, thus easily spread at boarding and breeding facilities.

  • DIAGNOSIS:  Diagnosis is usually done by a fecal test and based on matching clinical signs. The common clinical signs are diarrhea, often with blood, vomit, weight loss, dehydration, and stunted growth.
  • PREVENTION: Prevention includes stress-free living, therapeutic supplements, vaccines, environmental control, and sound hygiene.
  • TREATMENT: Treatment includes dewormers and in severe cases hospitalization supportive medicine and fluids.

INTESTINAL PARASITE in Bulldog and Fr. Bulldogs

  • Roundworms
  • Tapeworms
  • Hookworms

Intestinal worms can be found at all ages and should be preventively treated. Tapeworms are carried by fleas, when the flea gets licked and swallowed by your dog the adult tapeworm is born. Hookworms can latch to the intestine wall and cause anemia

  • DIAGNOSIS: Part of the diagnosis is based on physical signs, physical evidence of the parasite in vomit or stool, and course their presence on a microscopic fecal test.
  • PREVENTION: Preventive Care includes proper nutrition, therapeutic supplements to boost the immune system and reduce stress and anxiety, routine fecal testing and prophylactic dewormings, and proper hygiene
  • TREATMENT: Treatment includes deworming and symptomatic support.

12. BULLDOG FLEAS & SKIN PARASITE PREVENTION

  • Fleas
  • Sarcoptic Mange Mite
  • Demodex Red Mite
  • Dermatophytes “Ringworms”

Fleas are heat sensitive thus they thrive in a warm climate but not so much in hot or cold ones

  1. DIAGNOSIS:  In most places, they can be seen during the warm months on your pet’s coat and skin over the belly or the back. They feed on your pet’s blood thus you might recognize their presence by finding their fecal material. Flea poop is digested blood seen as black pepper-like deposits on your pet’s fur. Intense itching and hair loss around the back and the base tail are consistent with a flea allergy, in contrast to cats a large percentage of dogs are allergic to flea bites.
  2. PREVENTION: Prevention includes flea prevention and regular combing to check for fleas and flea-poop. As always keep your puppy healthy, in a stress-free clean environment, and practice good hygiene.
  3. TREATMENT: flea shampoo, monthly topicals or chews

DEMODEX MITE

Other skin parasites are demodex mites that are common to bulldog puppies at their mild juvenile localized form, it’s usually self-limited and will subside once the puppy’s immune system matures. It usually presents as non-itchy focal baldness.

In contrast to the puppy’s mild focal demodicosis, the adult type is usually generalized, diffuse, and dramatic. It tends to last, can progress in its severity, and become itchy due to secondary infection.

  • DIAGNOSIS: Skin scrapes with oil under low power microscope
  • PREVENTION: Reduced stress to avoid suppression of the immune system, therapeutic immune boosting, and calming supplements.
  • TREATMENT: Adult demodicosis should be treated aggressively. Treatment included form usually topical medicated bully antiseptic degreasing shampoos and gels as well as bully supplements to boost the immune system as mentioned above. Some flea preventives also can help treat and prevent demodex.

The adult form might require antibacterial and antifungal topical and systemic treatment for secondary infections

All forms of the demodex red mits are not contagious.

13. BULLDOG VACCINE BOOSTER >

Bulldog and French bulldog mature dogs usually require a booster of their core vaccines once every 3 years

BULLDOG & FRENCH BULLDOG CORE VACCINES

  1. Parvovirus
  2. Distemper
  3. Adenovirus
  4. and Rabies

Non-core vaccines are optional and per case and situation and include vaccines such as kennel Cough, Parainfluenza, and Leptospirosis

When it comes to providing vaccines for your bulldog, it’s essential to discuss and decide with the guidance of your veterinarian, rather than relying solely on a breeder or local store. While some breeders may offer vaccines for you to administer at home, others may advise against it or have reservations about certain vaccines. It’s best to avoid making decisions based solely on convenience or preference and instead prioritize the health and well-being of your bulldog by consulting with your veterinarian.

Your vet can provide valuable insights into the merits of vaccination, recommend the appropriate vaccines based on your bulldog’s individual needs and lifestyle, and ensure that they are administered safely and effectively.

Puppy vaccines are usually boosted once again after 1 year and then every 3 years

14. BULLDOG HEART & HEART VESSELS PARASITE PREVENTION

Heartworms are transmitted to your bulldog by a mosquito bite. The parasite ends up clogging the main heart vessels and heart chambers. Mosquitoes are more common in some regions thus you can consult your veterinarian bout your regional status.

  • DIAGNOSIS: Your bulldog might exhibit fatigue, persistent cough, exercise intolerance, and distended belly-filled fluid and end in fetal heart failure. Due to the heartworm cycle, the lab test is only effective at six months of age and above. We can also find them in a blood sample under a microscope and often evidence of their pathology on radiographs and/or ultrasounds.
  • PREVENTIVE: indoor, mosquito prevention/control. Multiple preventive products in oral topicals and injectables should be used annually in endemic areas.
  • TREATMENT: You want to avoid treatment by proper prevention. The treatment can be dangerous, expensive, and require long confinement.
