5. Senior Bulldog ARTHRITIS & CHRONIC PAIN:

Arthritis and arthritic pain in bulldogs often develop due to the chronic wear and tear of joints, which worsens over time.

As the protective cartilage in the joints deteriorates, the bones lose their cushioning. This exposes the articulating parts of the joint, causing bare bone sections to rub and grind against each other, especially during movement and activity. This friction leads to inflammation, discomfort, and pain for the bulldog.

Common arthritic painfull joints are the

  • hip
  • elbows
  • knees
  • lumbosacral vertebra
  • other vertebral articulations (spondylosis).

BULLDOG ARTHRITIS & PAIN DIAGNOSIS:

Watch for clinical signs consistent with arthritis, such as a gradual rise from a resting position and difficulties ascending stairs or jumping.

During a veterinarian’s physical examination, reduced range of motion and signs of discomfort are often evident during the orthopedic assessment.

Diagnostic imaging, such as radiographs, often reveal:

  • bone spurs
  • abnormal activity in the bone periosteum
  • fused vertebra,
  • excess of joint fluid

BULLDOG ARTHRITIS & PAIN PREVENTIVE:

  • WEIGHT LOSS
  • EXERCISE: Regular low-impact activity (swimming, walking on a soft surface)
  • SUPPLEMENTS: therapeutic joint and anti-inflammatory supplements.
  • REGENERATIVE MEDICINE: Stem Cell Therapy

BULLDOG ARTHRITIS TREATMENT:

  • Rx: Prescription pain management, usually with NSAID and analgesics
  • SUPPLEMENTS: Therapeutic Bully Supplements
  • REGENERATIVE MEDICINE: Stem cell therapy, PRP, Laser Therapy

6. Senior Bulldog SCREENING HEALTH CHECK (Labs):

As your bulldog ages, he or she becomes increasingly susceptible to diseases associated with aging.

Preventive screening tests can be life-saving.

Common tests for senior bulldogs include:

  • CBC: complete blood count (RBC, WBC, etc.)
  • Chemistries: electrolytes, liver enzymes, sugar, kidney function, etc
  • Urinalysis: helps diagnose conditions like bacterial cystitis, diabetes, kidney disease, and many more
  • Fecal Test: intestinal parasite screen
  • Blood Pressure
  • Thyroid Panel
  • Tear Production: help diagnose bulldog dry eye
  • Radiographs: help diagnose heart & lung disease, arthritis, cancer, etc

BULLDOG LAB CHEMISTRIES:

That includes, among others,

  • GLUCOSE: Blood sugar: can help rule out diabetes
  • BUN & CREATININE: Kidney function can help rule out renal disease
  • ALT, AST, BILIRUBIN: Liver enzyme THAT can help rule out a degenerative change of the liver, overuse of drugs, gallbladder and duct,  liver cancer, etc
  • Pancreatic enzymes
  • CALCIUM, SODIUM, AND POTASSIUM: Electrolyte levels can help rule out a wide range of conditions, such as adrenal crisis

BULLDOG BLOOD COUNT (CBC):

  • RBC: red blood cells can help rule out anemia
  • WBC: white blood cells of various types can help rule out infection and inflammation
  • TEMPLATES & CLOTTING FACTORS: can help rule out  bleeding problems  (coagulation)

BULLDOG URINE ANALYSIS

Can help rule out urine infection, stones, and kidney disease

OTHER SCREENING TESTS FOR SENIOR BULLDOG

  • BLOOD PRESSURE: check for hypertension
  • TONOMETRY: rule out glaucoma
  • TEAR PRODUCTION
  • RADIOGRAPHS: rule out arthritis, cancer, and heart disease
  • THYROID LEVELS: rule out hypothyroid

7. Senior Bulldog SEDATION & ANESTHESIA SAFETY:

Anesthesia risks are notably heightened in brachycephalic breeds such as the English Bulldog and French Bulldog, with this risk escalating as they age. Given these breeds’ predisposition to airway issues, expertise in bulldog and French bulldog anesthesia is essential.

Your veterinarian should possess comprehensive knowledge of all four phases of bulldog anesthesia:

  1. Pre-anesthetic protocols
  2. Anesthesia induction
  3. Anesthesia monitoring
  4. Post-op recovery

Dr. Kraemer designed custom-made bully anesthetic protocols to help optimize their safety and recovery.

8. Senior Bulldog WEIGHT & EXERCISE:

Weight control and exercise go hand in hand; both are essential preventive measures, and their significance increases as your bulldog ages

 OBEISITY IN BULLDOGS:

Obesity has a significant impact on the health and well-being of senior bulldogs. It hastens the advancement of osteoarthritis, exacerbating chronic pain. Additionally, excess weight adversely affects the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, which are already compromised in brachycephalic breeds.

Here is a concise list of medical conditions associated with obesity:

  • ARTHRITIS
  • CHRONIC PAIN
  • HEART DISEASE
  • BLOOD PRESSURE: hypertension and kidney disease
  • BLOOD SUGER: Diabetes
  • ANESTHETIC RISKS

EXERCISE AND ACTIVITY IN SENIOR BULLDOGS

Regular exercise and activity are essential for preventing obesity and promoting the mental well-being, quality of life, and longevity of your senior bulldog. It’s crucial to tailor the level of activity and exercise to your bulldog’s age and health condition, taking into account factors such as weather, climate, and conditioning

9. Senior Bulldog DIET & NUTRITION:

Ensuring a well-balanced, high-quality diet is essential for the aging and overall wellness of your senior bulldog.

Choose a diet specifically formulated for seniors, recognizing that aging dogs have unique nutritional requirements compared to puppies and young adults.

Avoid falling for expensive or hyped-up diets; steer clear of gimmicks and marketing tactics. It’s generally best to stick to reputable brands and prescription manufacturers.

In certain situations, prescription diets may be recommended, especially for conditions like food allergies, kidney disease, urinary stones, obesity, digestive issues, and more.

Supplementing your pet’s diet with therapeutic bully supplements can be a valuable addition to their nutritional regimen.

10. Senior Bulldog INTESTINAL PARASITE PREVENTION (FECAL & DEWORMING):

Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are prone to various parasitic infestations, including both topical and internal parasites. Your bulldog may be at risk of experiencing either or both types.

Intestinal parasites consist of worms and contagious protozoan organisms, which can be acquired from the environment or transmitted through other parasites, such as fleas.

Due to the weakened and less effective nature of their aging immune systems, the potential physical harm caused by these parasites can be particularly severe for senior bulldogs.

Starting early preventive measures against parasites is essential for the overall well-being of your senior bulldog.

BULLDOG PARASITE & PUBLIC HEALTH ZOONOSIS:

Protecting your children and family necessitates the diligent prevention of intestinal parasites. Many of these parasites are contagious and can pose a threat to human health. Children, in particular, are vulnerable due to their developing immune systems and limited awareness of proper hygiene practices.

Prioritizing the prevention of intestinal parasites is crucial for the safety of your kids and family.

INTESTINAL PROTOZOA in Senior Bulldog and French Bulldog:

Protozoa in bulldogs are highly contagious and can easily spread in boarding and breeding facilities due to contact with contaminated surroundings, particularly water sources contaminated by fecal material.

DIAGNOSIS: Typically, diagnosis involves a fecal test correlating with observed clinical signs.

Common indicators include:

  • diarrhea, often with blood
  • vomiting
  • weight loss
  • dehydration
  • stunted growth.

PREVENTION: Effective prevention strategies encompass

  • stress-free living conditions
  • therapeutic supplements
  • vaccines
  • environmental control
  • stringent hygiene practices

TREATMENT: Treatment involves the use of dewormers. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary with supportive medicines and fluid therapy.

INTESTINAL PARASITE in Senior Bulldog and French Bulldogs

  • Roundworms
  • Tapeworms
  • Hookworms

Intestinal worms can affect dogs of all ages and should be treated preventively. Tapeworms, for example, are transmitted through fleas; when a dog ingests a flea, the tapeworm can develop in its intestine. Hookworms, on the other hand, attach to the intestinal wall and can lead to anemia. Therefore, it’s important to regularly treat and prevent these parasites in dogs.

DIAGNOSIS: Part of the diagnosis is based on physical signs, physical evidence of the parasite in vomit or stool, and, of course, their presence on a microscopic fecal test.

PREVENTION: Preventive Care includes

  • proper nutrition
  • therapeutic supplements to boost the immune system and reduce stress and anxiety
  • routine fecal testing
  • prophylactic dewormings
  • proper hygiene

TREATMENT: Treatment includes deworming and symptomatic support.

11. Senior Bulldog FLEAS & SKIN PARASITE PREVENTION

  • Fleas
  • Sarcoptic Mange Mite
  • Demodex Red Mite
  • Dermatophytes “Ringworms”

Fleas are heat-sensitive, so they thrive in a warm climate but not so much in hot or cold ones

BULLDOG FLEAS PRESENTATION:

During warmer months, fleas are often visible on your pet’s coat and skin, especially around the belly or back. These parasites feed on your pet’s blood, and their presence can be detected by finding their fecal material on your pet’s coat. Flea droppings, which resemble black pepper-like deposits on your pet’s fur, indicate digested blood.

If your pet experiences severe itching and hair loss around the back and base of the tail, it may indicate a flea allergy. Unlike cats, a significant percentage of dogs are allergic to flea bites.

BULLDOG FLEAS PREVENTION:

Prevention includes flea prevention and regular combing to check for fleas and flea poop. As always, keep your puppy healthy, in a stress-free, clean environment, and practice good hygiene.

BULLDOG DEMODEX MITE

Demodex mites are a type of skin parasite that commonly affects bulldog puppies in a mild, localized form during their juvenile stage. This condition is usually self-limiting and resolves as the puppy’s immune system matures. It often presents as non-itchy focal baldness.

In contrast, the adult form of demodicosis is typically generalized, diffuse, and more severe. This type of demodicosis tends to persist, may worsen in severity, and can become itchy due to secondary infections.

Demodex red mites are not contagious.

DIAGNOSIS: skin scrapes with oil under a low-power microscope

PREVENTION: reduced stress to avoid suppression of the immune system, therapeutic immune-boosting supplements, and calming supplements.

TREATMENT: Treatment included form usually topical medicated bully antiseptic degreasing shampoos and gels as well as bully supplements to boost the immune system as mentioned above. Some flea preventives can also help treat and prevent demodex.

The adult form might require antibacterial and antifungal topical and systemic treatment for secondary infections.

Adult demodicosis should be treated aggressively.

12. Senior Bulldog HEART & HEART VESSELS PARASITE PREVENTION

Heartworms are transmitted to bulldogs through mosquito bites, with the parasites eventually obstructing the main heart vessels and chambers. The prevalence of mosquitoes varies by region, so it’s advisable to consult your veterinarian about the local status of heartworm transmission.

DIAGNOSIS: Signs of heartworm infection in dogs may include fatigue, persistent coughing, exercise intolerance, and a distended belly due to fluid accumulation, which can lead to potential heart failure. Laboratory tests are effective at detecting heartworms in dogs aged 6 months and older. Additionally, these parasites can be identified in a blood sample under a microscope, with evidence of their pathology often visible on radiographs and/or ultrasounds.

PREVENTION: Indoor living and mosquito prevention and control are key preventive measures. In endemic areas, various preventive products, including oral, topical, and injectable options, should be administered annually.

TREATMENT: It is crucial to prioritize prevention over treatment due to the risks involved.

Treating heartworm infection can be hazardous, expensive, and necessitate extended confinement.

13. Senior Bulldog STEM CELL & CYROBANKING

Dr. Kraemer is recognized as one of the early pioneers who embraced and offered same-day stem cell therapy, an innovative therapeutic approach. This cutting-edge treatment includes the option of cryobanking for future requirements.

Stem cells are abundant in adipose tissue (fat), and they can be easily and safely harvested during procedures such as spaying and neutering, incurring minimal costs. These harvested stem cells can be used for immediate treatment or preserved for future needs. The surplus stored stem cells can be accessed at a low cost, safely, and often without the need for anesthesia.

Stem cell therapy is ideal for senior bulldogs suffering from chronic pain due to arthritis of the joint and spin (spondylosis).

They can be injected directly into the joints as well as to the acupuncture point of sublumbar muscles, into the subarachnoid space (spinal canal), skin, and intravenous.

Dr. Kraemer has treated senior bulldogs with stem cell therapy for a wide range of conditions including:

  • KIDNEY DISEASE
  • ATOPIC ALLERGIC DERMATITIS
  • INTERDIGITAL CYST
  • DISC DISEASE
  • IBD (autoimmune disease)
