Idiopathic Head Tremors

What is that?

The underlying medical origin of bulldog and French bulldog head tremors is mostly unknown and is considered “benign”, It is considered harmless, so no treatment is required but for safety, an exam is recommended.

Symptoms

Sudden episodic head bobbing, tremors, or nodding of the head. It can last a few seconds to minutes and typically stops when the pet is distracted.

Elongated Soft Palate

What is that?

Elongated soft palate in bulldogs and French bulldogs elongated soft palate is an abnormality that can cause increased airway resistance, as well as an increase in negative intra-airway pressure, laryngeal fatigue, and irreversible laryngeal atrophy.

Symptoms

The condition is exasperated by excitement or/and activity and manifested by a loud breathing sound (stridor). It often progresses to retching, hyperthermia, and life-threatening cardio, circulatory and respiratory collapse.

Aspiration Pneumonia

What is that?

Aspiration (or inhalation) pneumonia is a condition in which your bulldog inhaled gastric material such as ingesta or acid. The foreign toxic material leads to your bulldog lungs becoming inflamed, reactive, and infected.

Symptoms

Pneumonia bulldogs typically present with a cough, fever, anorexia, and hacking and retching. Difficult Breathing, cyanosis, and potential life-threatening cardio, circulatory and respiratory collapse.

Stenotic Nares

What is that?

Stenotic Nares (pinched nares) are part of the flat face (brachycephalic) syndrome. The nasal airflow restricted by the atrophied collapsed nasal cartilage increases the negative intra-airway pressure.

Symptoms

Bulldogs and Fr. Bulldogs with pinched nose exhibit snoring, hacking & retching, and breathing difficulty. Severe chronic stenotic nares can lead to cyanosis and potential life-threatening cardio, circulatory and respiratory collapse.

Sleep Apnea

What is that?

Sleep apnea in bulldogs is mostly associated with BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome), as well as laryngeal obstruction, oropharyngeal narrowing, and swollen nasal turbinate's.

Symptoms

Loud snoring and chocking sounds; frequent gasps with breathing pauses Restless sleeping with sudden waking Irritable, depressed, fatigued, and stressed prone to respiratory, heart, and hypertension diseases

BOAS (Brachycephalic Syndrome)

What is that?

Brachycephalic Syndrome or Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BCS, BOAS) is also called the “Flat Face Dog Syndrome, which includes the elongated soft palate, pinched nose, saccules, and hypoplastic trachea.

Symptoms

The condition is most noticeable during excitement and activity by the harsh, loud breathing sound (stridor), snorting, and often cyanosis, retching, hyperthermia, and collapse.

Kennel Cough

What is that?

Kennel Cough (also known as bulldog infectious tracheobronchitis) is a highly contagious respiratory disease. Bulldogs often contract it when stressed and in contact with other dogs in public areas like daycare, dog shows, and boarding facilities.

Symptoms

the cough is typically nonproductive, with a “hairball-like honking sound. Severe cases can present with a fever and if retching ensues it could progress to aspiration pneumonia.
