Why my Fr. Bulldog Anal Gland is Swollen, Red, Painful and Infected?🚨
Hello Dr K I have two frenchies and my 3 year old has been having trouble with there anal glands for the last month
I thought it initially started because my younger frenchie was licking my 3 year olds butt.
One day I saw small drips of blood develop about a week or two later, but nothing in the stool. I treated it with organic aloe wipes and natural dog skin balm.
Then two weeks went by with nothing leaking, and boom I noticed a swollen ball near the glands which felt hard and was discharging.

I read it might be because of my dogs diet or weight so I have been walking him every day since then and his stool seems normal .
Can a Bully Fiber Supplement Help the Anal Gland Impaction?🥦
I just purchased your high-fiber anal supplement, but would you have any clues on how to treat it or maybe you can suggest a cream or medicine I can give him and what might be causing it, I emailed a picture, and Kate asked me to write this question.
I have a vet appointment tomorrow but it would be cool if I can get a second opinion from a bulley vet he’s my baby and I would hate anything to happen to him appreciate your help

Answer to Your Fr. Bulldog Anal Gland Problem 🚨
Dear Edgar,
From the photo you provided, it looks like one of the right anal glands is impacted, inflamed, and swollen. These glands can easily become infected, develop abscesses, and rupture, so timing is important.
⏰It’s best to address anal gland problems sooner rather than later.
Dr. Kraemer What is the purpose of my Fr. Bulldog Anal Glandâť“
While the exact evolutionary purpose of anal glands remains uncertain, the pungent odor of their secretions suggests they serve as a marking scent—possibly explaining why your other Frenchie has been licking the area.

Dr. Kraemer, How Do I Care and Treat Anal Gland Problems?
➡️ Express the Gland: The best method is rectal expression, which will help to ensure the gland is fully empty.
To express anal glands on your own, watch my how-to videos for guidance; otherwise, have your veterinary team perform the procedure.
⚠️ Caution: Groomers often do not express the rectal glands rectally but do so by applying pressure on the outside, meaning they may not fully empty them.
If there’s an abscess or rupture of the gland, this might require antiseptic flushing under anesthesia.
Bulldog Anal Gland Pain & Inflammation Management:
➡️ Medication: For server cases and anal gland abscesses, pain medication, short-term anti-inflammatory drugs, and antibiotics may be necessary.
➡️ Cold laser therapy can be a non-pharmaceutical option for reducing inflammation and promoting healing.
➡️ Bully Therapeutics: When possible, substitute prescriptions with supplements; examples are:
- V4B Bully Comfort and AchLess Formula
- V4B Bully Skin & Coat DermaCareÂ
- V4B Bully Fish Oil EFA
- V4B Bully Itch & Allergy ItchLess Formula
Dr. Kraemer, What is the Best Way to Prevent Anal Gland Problems?
- high-quality diet
- regular exercise
- lean body weight
- Anal Gland Gentle Move Bully Therapeutics and Anal Gland Bundles can support gland health.
French Bulldog Tail Fold Dermatitis Leading to Anal Gland Disease:
From your photo, I also noticed redness in the tailfold area. Bulldog wrinkle moist dermatitis in this area can cause itching around the perianal region and may serve as a source of bacterial infection for the nearby anal gland.
You must adhere to daily cleaning with bully antiseptic wipes to help prevent bulldog wrinkles, skin folds, and tail pocket moist dermatitis.
The V4B antibacterial and anti-yeast wipes, lotion, spray, and rinse will help prevent bacterial overgrowth.
Let me know if you need further guidance.
Best,
Dr. Kraemer Vet4Bulldog
